Your Path to Success in Graduate Education!

How much does it cost to go to graduate school? Maybe nothing!

Research Assistantships

For a detailed comparison of RAs, TAs, and fellowships, refer to the table on the Resources page.

The vast majority of research support in the sciences comes from federal agencies in the form of competitive grants awarded to faculty members. Faculty members who secure grants receive funding for their research activities including support in the form of research assistantships for teams of graduate students who will conduct the core of the funded project's research. Funding from research grants provides opportunities for support of many students pursuing master's or doctoral degrees in science. In order to make the most of these opportunities, you must approach the application process as an investigative assignment. Applying only for fellowships provides limited opportunities for financial support; discovering research grants in the discipline that interests you provides many more prospects for funding.

We have prepared the GradPortal tutorial to teach you how to search for funded grant projects - and how to locate the key faculty who manage those projects. It is essential that faculty with grants recruit graduate students to conduct the grant research. In return, the students receive professional mentorship, and they generally receive sufficient financial support to sustain them through their graduate program.
